Tangerang City DPRD Chair’s Replacement Appointment Marked by Demonstration
Syaiful Milah was sworn in on Monday (12 October) as the interim replacement for Rusdi Alam, who died on 19 July 2026, as chair of the Tangerang City DPRD in Banten.
The plenary session for the oath-taking and assumption of office was marked by a demonstration outside the Tangerang City DPRD building.
Dozens of demonstrators called on the new chair to hear public concerns and oversee a range of issues, including environmental pollution, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and the welfare of Tangerang City residents.
In response, Syaiful Milah said the demonstration represented moral support for the legislature and served as a reminder of its role as the people’s representative.
“Generally, there is always a demonstration whenever a DPRD chair is sworn in. Thankfully, that means there is support and prior communication with the leadership and members of the DPRD to ensure the inauguration proceeds peacefully,” Syaiful Milah said after taking office.
Syaiful Milah said he would continue to be critical despite becoming DPRD chair.
He said he would scrutinise public policies on the environment, infrastructure and fibre-optic cables, as well as continue discussions on draft regional regulations (Raperda) previously considered by the former chair.
“There is a lot to address, including the environment, infrastructure and fibre-optic cables, as well as coordination with the mayor. This includes the draft regional regulations discussed by the late chair,” he said.
“I will remain critical, while working in cooperation with the government,” he added.
The Tangerang City DPRD chair expressed gratitude that the inauguration and oath-taking had proceeded smoothly and peacefully, despite the demonstration outside the building.
Looking ahead, Syaiful Milah said he hoped to receive public support as he took on his new responsibility as chair of the Tangerang City DPRD.
