The Tangerang City Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) is urging the Tangerang City Government (Pemkot) to optimise the dry season to accelerate the normalisation of waterways. This step is considered crucial as a mitigation effort ahead of the rainy season, so that the potential for flooding in various areas can be minimised through more effective handling. Deputy Speaker II of the Tangerang City DPRD, Arief Wibowo, stated that the dry season is the right momentum for the local government to conduct a comprehensive mapping of points requiring immediate attention. According to him, this mapping will serve as a strong foundation for determining normalisation steps and strengthening the water management system in Tangerang City. “Information from the BMKG and BRIN indicates the potential for a fairly long dry season. However, we must remain vigilant about climate change, which can alter the weather at any time. This moment must be used to map vulnerable points so they become part of the flood risk mitigation system,” said Arief in Tangerang on Saturday (25/7/2026). Arief explained that carrying out normalisation when water discharge is low is far more effective and optimal than during the rainy season. Once the mapping is complete, the government can more accurately compile an analysis of work requirements and the necessary resources. In addition to technical fieldwork, the mapping results will also form the basis for preparing budget requirements. This is particularly related to the discussion of the General Budget Policy and Provisional Budget Ceiling Priorities (KUA-PPAS) for the 2027 Fiscal Year and the Revised Regional Budget. “We encourage that the mapped normalisation needs be immediately followed up to push for their budgeting in the nearest budget revision. With preparations made during the dry season, Tangerang City will be much more prepared when the rainy season arrives,” he added. Responding to this push, the Tangerang City Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) confirmed that it is currently utilising the hot weather to remove sedimentation and clean river flows. This effort aims to maintain the water capacity in vulnerable areas. Head of the Tangerang City PUPR Agency, Taufik Syahzaeni, revealed that one of the main focuses at present is the removal of sedimentation in Kali Serua, Ciledug. The city government has deployed the Water Resources Maintenance Team to normalise the river, which is part of the Kali Angke River Basin (DAS). “We continue to carry out sustainable mitigation by strengthening flood control infrastructure, including rivers and waterways in vulnerable zones, such as Kali Serua,” concluded Taufik.
