The Tangerang Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in Banten is seeking assistance from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) to accelerate the extinguishing of a fire at the Jatiwaringin final disposal site (TPA). The Tangerang BPBD hopes a BNPB helicopter can be deployed to help douse flames at fire spots that are difficult to reach.

"I have been continuously communicating with the BNPB, while requesting field reports for handling the fire at TPA Jatiwaringin," said Tangerang Regency BPBD Head Achmad Taufik in Tangerang, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

He said the proposal for BNPB assistance was made to accelerate the handling of the TPA Jatiwaringin fire, as his agency is currently experiencing technical constraints regarding access for firefighting, which is considered difficult for firefighters to reach.

"The position of the waste piles, which are like mountains, is an obstacle. We are having difficulty reaching the top with vehicles, while the hoses are already quite long, but the thick smoke makes it hard for us to access the fire spots," he explained.

According to him, assistance from the BNPB in the form of deploying a water-bombing helicopter is considered effective in accelerating the current emergency response. His agency cited the difficulty of accessing the firefighting points.

"I have made efforts to the BNPB to help bring in a helicopter for water spraying from above, given the condition that our fleet is struggling to get close to the fire," he stated.

Nevertheless, his agency is currently still optimising the deployment of 10 fire engines with 45 personnel to extinguish the blaze.

With difficult access, he continued, the firefighting team is also carrying out water spraying at fire spots that are still considered to be quite large.

"Water sources are relatively accessible and safe. Although the road is somewhat narrow, we can still access it," said Achmad Taufik.

Based on initial information, the fire is suspected to have been caused by methane gas or flammable hydrocarbon compounds generated by the extreme hot weather hitting the region.

"When the heat is so high, the waste piles emit smoke. Over time, this becomes fire and will continue to spread to other locations," Taufik said.
