As a small trader I have suffered a big loss due to the recent
riot at the Tanah Abang market in Central Jakarta. The dispute
between two gangs affected our trading on that day. It does not
seem possible to lodge a claim for the loss.

I have no idea what the consequences would have been if
security personnel had not taken immediate steps to overcome the
chaos. The problem is not only with traders in that area but also
with traders depending on the Tanah Abang market for their
supplies. The Tanah Abang market is a key to the Indonesian
economy after Pintu Besar and Pasar Pagi (Mangga Dua).
One day without trading in Tanah Abang causes a loss of billions
of rupiah.

Therefore, in order to prevent similar riots from happening
again, security in Tanah Abang needs serious attention. Also
strongly dependent on Tanah Abang are the laborers, drivers, food
vendors, hawkers, etc.. These people also hope for an end to the
chaos.
