Tambora Residents Hit by Fire Again Between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha
Not long after enduring the aftermath of a fire just before Eid al-Fitr 2026, some residents of Tambora in West Jakarta faced a similar disaster following Eid al-Adha. Several months after a major fire struck the Tanah Sereal neighbourhood ahead of Eid al-Fitr, flames once again engulfed homes in Krendang, Tambora. A fire that broke out on the evening of Thursday, 28 May 2026, at Jalan Krendang Barat Gang 2 No. 3, RT 13/RW 4, Krendang Village, Tambora Subdistrict, destroyed 27 residential units in a densely populated area. ‘The affected objects were 27 residential units,’ said Syaiful Kahfi, Head of Operations at the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat), on Friday, 29 May 2026. Firefighters deployed 22 fire engines and 105 personnel to extinguish the blaze. However, firefighting efforts were hindered by narrow alleys and densely packed buildings at the scene. ‘The dense residential conditions and narrow access roads posed challenges during firefighting operations,’ Syaiful added. The fire was finally extinguished around 11:32 PM WIB. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by police and fire officials. While some residents were busy preparing ketupat and welcoming Eid guests, the Soleh family (aged 65) had to clear the charred remains of their burned home. After the evacuation period ended, Soleh and his 10 family members returned to live in the ground floor of their charred, wall-less home. ‘We moved here last Friday, the 20th, and started relocating that Saturday night,’ Soleh told Kompas.com earlier. Ani, Soleh’s wife (59), said the fire that destroyed their home and grocery shop made Eid al-Fitr feel hollow.
