Tambora Residents Hang Banner Rejecting Temporary Waste Collection Point on Roadside
Residents in the Kalianyar area of Tambora, West Jakarta, have hung a rejection banner against a temporary waste storage site (TPS) on the side of Jalan Kalianyar IX. According to observations at the location, there is a residents’ rejection banner written on black and white cloth on the roadside that was once piled with rubbish. “Residents of RT 11 and 12 reject TPS (Temporary Waste Storage) activities here. We want a healthy life, do not pollute our environment. 10 years enduring rotten smells,” reads the banner. One rubbish truck belonging to the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency (LH) was seen operating, transporting leftover rubbish from several carts and open-bed vehicles. However, residents are urging the local government to provide a proper TPS so that the road shoulder is no longer repurposed as a waste dumping site. The head of RT 12 RW 01 Kalianyar, Toyib, confirmed that the banner installation is a form of his residents’ protest against the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency. “Yes, that was put up by residents because yesterday the rubbish protest was delayed for a very long time and clearly disturbs residents, even causing traffic jams because the location blocks the road,” said Toyib when met by Kompas.com at the site on Monday (30/3/2026). Toyib stated that although the Eid leftover rubbish piles have been cleared, the banner is still left up because the root problem has not been resolved, namely the lack of suitable land for a TPS. The banner was hung with the aim of preventing parties from using the road shoulder again as a waste storage site. “Our residents indeed reject if rubbish is dumped there again. Because that’s on the road, it’s not the place, if not given a banner it will come back,” he said. This rubbish pile-up that overflowed onto the road body only occurred during the period from the end of Ramadan to the Eid holiday. “Yesterday’s pile-up was due to the incident at Bantar Gebang. There was even an instruction from the Environment Agency to residents on 8 March not to dispose of rubbish temporarily,” Toyib explained. After going viral and being complained about by residents, said Toyib, the handling was finally carried out a few days after Eid, specifically on 24 to 25 March 2026.
