Tamansari Residents Install CCTV to Prevent Brawls and Crime

Residents of RW 07 Tamansari, West Jakarta, have taken the initiative to install CCTV cameras at several locations to anticipate criminal activity, such as motorcycle theft and brawls.

RW 07 Tamansari chairman Ruslan Abdulgani said the initiative stemmed from residents’ need for security assurance in their neighbourhood, which could be monitored by the community.

“Firstly, we want to control the security of the area from motorcycle theft, then thefts committed by outsiders, and we can also monitor the youths in the RW 07 area,” he said at the RW 07 Tamansari office on Tuesday.

Ruslan explained that the neighbourhood monitoring project has been running for approximately one month. Funding for the project comes from the RW 07 treasury combined with financial support from each neighbourhood unit (RT) in the area.

“The procurement comes from the RW treasury, and we also asked for assistance from the RTs. So we collect a certain amount from each RT, and the remainder is covered by the RW treasury. It is purely self-funded by the RTs and RW,” he said.

“For now there are eight, perhaps next week there will be nine, and by the end of the year, God willing, all 16 will be installed,” Ruslan added.

According to him, this technology-based security innovation has proven to bring significant positive impact. Within one month of the initial installation, the RW 07 Tamansari neighbourhood has been deemed much safer and more conducive.

Residents take turns monitoring the CCTV footage from the RW post. If anything suspicious is spotted, they immediately go to the location.

“In my opinion it is very effective because we are all monitored here. So all security is monitored from a single point,” he said.

He expressed gratitude that since the CCTV cameras were installed at vulnerable corners, there have been no further reports of crime or potential friction among youths.

“Alhamdulillah, since the installation of these CCTV cameras there have been no indications of motorcycle theft or brawls,” Ruslan said.
