Taman Puring Traders Surprised by Relocation Plan as Pramono Promises Suitable Trading Space
Traders at Pasar Taman Puring in South Jakarta say they were surprised by plans to relocate them. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the traders would be moved to a suitable place where they could continue doing business.
Pramono confirmed that Pasar Taman Puring would be completely transformed into Taman Setara, a park for people with disabilities. The Jakarta provincial government is still discussing and considering a relocation site for the traders.
“We of course have to find a place where the traders can continue doing business. That is what is currently under discussion,” Pramono said after inaugurating a Seventh-day Adventist church in East Jakarta on Sunday (25 October 2026).
“Whatever the circumstances, especially in the current economic climate, I always think about how the traders can carry on their businesses as well as possible,” he added.
Pramono said the plan to build Taman Setara on the Pasar Taman Puring site had been proposed in 2025, when Muhammad Anwar was South Jakarta mayor.
“So, before the new mayor, Mr [Muhammad] Anwar had already proposed it to me, and in principle I had approved the idea of redeveloping Taman Puring, which had been damaged by fire at the time, and using it entirely as a park,” he said.
Pramono explained that Jakarta already had many parks, but none specifically designed for people with disabilities.
“Jakarta does not yet have a park for people with disabilities, so this is a key need. Hopefully, we can soon realise Taman Puring as an inclusive park,” he said.
Traders surprised by relocation plan
Pasar Taman Puring traders had earlier said they were taken aback by reports of a possible relocation to Lenteng Agung, also in South Jakarta. They hope the market will be redeveloped so that micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) do not have to move to Teras LA, which is already occupied by former Pasar Barito traders.
Asmun, coordinator of the Taman Puring stallholders, said he had first learned about the proposed move to Lenteng Agung from social media reports. At a meeting on Thursday (22 October), South Jakarta municipal officials had not specified where the traders would be relocated.
“When we met the mayor the other day, he did not say where the location would be. He only said there would be a relocation. I found out from social media, from a detikcom report, that there was a plan to move us to Lenteng Agung,” Asmun told reporters on Saturday (24 October 2026).
Asmun said most traders live in Kebayoran Lama and Kebayoran Baru, near Pasar Taman Puring. He said travelling to Lenteng Agung would place an additional burden on them in the form of daily transport costs.
“We traders, along with our fellow stallholders, were all surprised because Lenteng Agung is far from where we live. It does not seem feasible as a relocation site. As a trader, I would find moving to Lenteng Agung difficult,” Asmun said.
“The daily journey would take quite a distance, and the back-and-forth travel costs would not be small, including when opening and closing [the stalls],” he added.
