Taman Puring to Become a Disabled People’s Park, Traders Allegedly Agree to Move

The Government of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) will redesign Taman Puring in South Jakarta into a green public space that is friendly to people with disabilities. The improvement, covering an area of about 3,000 square metres, will make it the first disabled people’s park in South Jakarta.

“When the Mayor of South Jakarta told me to refurbish Taman Puring, I offered support and approved it,” said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung at the Kebayoran Baru Sub-district Office, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, 19 May.

“We will use Taman Puring as a Disabled People’s Park in South Jakarta,” he added.

Pramono said the plan aligns with the high level of public enthusiasm for public facilities, as seen at Taman Bendera Pusaka.

“Because here at the Taman Bendera Pusaka, it has already received significant appreciation and many visitors,” he said.

Claim that traders were prepared to move without public announcement

Pramono confirmed that the initial stage of cleaning the park site and relocating traders had already begun the night before. He admitted the relocation process was carried out without public announcement.

“And I am not the type to make a big fanfare, but Alhamdulillah it has succeeded; last night the mayor’s team already moved those traders,” he said.

To accelerate the development of this facility, Pramono instructed his staff to prepare the budget allocation promptly.

“Mr Mayor, please propose it before 1 June; I have already accepted,” Pramono stated.

Although it will be the first in South Jakarta, Pramono noted that similar public spaces had already been built by the government in the Pademangan area. For the Taman Puring project, he emphasised extra attention to the construction details.

Pramono specifically called for the park to be designed by experts who truly understand the needs of the disabled.

“There is already a disabled park in Jakarta, namely in Pademangan. But I will ask that this South Jakarta park use architecture that understands the needs of the disabled, so that space for the disabled can be really utilised by those who need it,” he said.

At the same venue, South Jakarta Mayor M Anwar claimed that the traders who previously sold in the Taman Puring area had already moved voluntarily and cleared their stalls themselves.

“Last night I reported that I had reorganised the former Taman Puring area. The traders, thank God, moved voluntarily and cleared their stalls themselves. Today we will begin levelling; God willing, we will restore its function to a park of about 3,000 square metres,” said Anwar.
