The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
TAM was established by graduate students at Ewha Woman University
in 1980. Since its opening performance in 1981, the company has
made 22 years of dance history. TAM put on occasional
performances from 1981 and repertory work from 1990.
The company is due to perform at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 and Oct. 4
at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta, as
part of Art Summit Indonesia 2004.
According to the summit, TAM has been recognized for its
unique artistic style and its place in the field. Using various
ideologies, themes and phenomena, TAM has faced on various
approaches in every dance work, which has led the way for the
development of modern dance in Korea.
TAM's unique choreographic style is reflected through its
highly skilled and technically expressive dancers, who have the
ability to crossover back and forth, from the meaning of
abbreviation to exaggeration.
TAM's solo performance, starting in 1997, had also provided
opportunities to introduce some excellent dancers.
On Oct. 4 and Oct 5 musicians Dieter Mack and Ensemble Surplus
are due to perform at 8 p.m. at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta as part
of Art Summit 2004.
Mack first toured Indonesia with a group of six musicians in
1988, at the invitation of the Goethe Institute. Although only
contemporary music was played, the concerts were almost all sold
out.
Prior to 1988, Mack's involvement with Indonesia was limited
to Bali and Balinese music, which led to the founding of his own
gamelan ensemble in 1982 in Germany. The 1988 tour marked his
first international experience as a composer.
During the 1988 tour, Mack met for the first time with Slamet
A. Sjukur, who, with Suka Hardjana, has become a long-time
collaborator with him.
Ensemble SurPlus was formed in 1992 and plays chamber music
ranging from duos to large instrumental combinations. Its primary
objective is to give new or unknown works an optimal performance,
regardless of compositional style or technical and intellectual
demands.
One of the pieces due to be performed by the ensemble, Taro,
is based on a simple musical theme (poko gending in Indonesian).
The melody is presented in counterpoint with a rhythmic texture
and is marked by a series of accents.
