The Indonesian government has welcomed an investment commitment from Japanese biopharmaceutical company Takeda to develop the national ecosystem for plasma-derived medicinal products (PODP). As an initial step, Takeda intends to invest up to US$30 million, equivalent to approximately Rp539 billion, over a two-year period. The allocation of these funds will be focused on building an integrated national plasma bank network.

Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, stated that Takeda’s move demonstrates high global investor confidence in Indonesia. According to Rosan, the high-tech healthcare sector in Indonesia is considered to have very promising investment prospects. This strategic investment is expected to create technology transfer, develop the quality of human resources, and open up high-skilled employment opportunities.

“The government continues to encourage investment that provides added value and strengthens national industrial capacity so that Indonesia can become a centre for manufacturing and health innovation in the region,” Rosan said. This strategic partnership aligns with the downstreaming programme in the health sector to enhance the competitiveness of national industry within the global supply chain.

Japan is recorded as one of the crucial investment partners for the Indonesian economy. Data from the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM shows Japan ranked as the fifth-largest investor in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2026, with a value of US$1 billion. Throughout the period from 2021 to the first quarter of 2026, total realised investment from Japan reached US$18.1 billion. This investment grew at an average rate of 13.2% and successfully absorbed up to 299,460 workers.

This collaboration is expected to broaden public access to crucial plasma-derived medicinal products. The government is also targeting the development of an innovative, independent, and sustainable biopharmaceutical industry ecosystem. “The first plasma bank is targeted to begin operations in 2027 as part of the development of a national plasma network that meets international standards,” he said.
