According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) website, in the Catholic Church, the Ash Wednesday Eucharistic Celebration (Mass) marks the beginning of Lent, a period of abstinence and fasting. After celebrating the Eucharist by applying ash to the forehead, Catholics will observe the 40-day Lenten period.
During the Ash Wednesday celebration, the ash comes from palm leaves that were blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year and subsequently burned. The ash is applied in the shape of a cross on the forehead and need not be worn throughout the entire day.
The ash may be washed off after Mass. However, many people choose to keep theirs as a remembrance until the evening.
Is Ash Wednesday 2026 a Public Holiday?
According to the Catholic Guidance section of the Ministry of Religious Affairs website, Ash Wednesday in Catholicism is the first day of Lent — a 40-day period before Easter dedicated to repentance, reflection, and spiritual preparation. Ash Wednesday holds significant meaning in the lives of Catholics as it marks the beginning of the journey towards the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
