Takbir in Bali Without Loudspeakers If It Coincides With Nyepi
Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar has revealed that takbir celebrations in Bali this year may be held without loudspeakers, as the moment at the end of Ramadan could coincide with Nyepi Day on March 19, 2026. Nasaruddin noted that Nyepi, celebrated by Hindus—the majority religion in Bali—must be observed in silence. Meanwhile, Muslims generally mark the night of takbir by proclaiming the takbir in mosques.
With the two holidays potentially overlapping, the government has adopted a middle path. ‘There is already an agreement with local governments and Bali’s community leaders that takbir does not conflict with Nyepi; the condition is that during Nyepi the takbir should proceed but without a sound system,’ Nasaruddin said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
Nasaruddin said takbir in Bali would take place from 18:00 to 21:00 WITA. He also noted that the government had not yet set the end date of Ramadan for this year and would hold an isbat session to determine the arrival of Eid al-Fitr on 19 March.
The Bali Forum for Religious Harmony issued a joint appeal ahead of Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr, as the two major religious celebrations could be close in date. Nyepi is scheduled for 19 March 2026, while Eid al-Fitr 1447 could fall the day after.
Mahrusun Hadyono, the head of Bali’s Ulama Council, confirmed the call, saying: ‘For Muslims, takbir is basically allowed, but there are regulations.’ The regulations include that takbir should be performed at mosques or musallas near residents, and that people should walk to places of worship.
Takbir should also be performed without loudspeakers, without firecrackers or other loud noises, and with adequate lighting. ‘It can be carried out from 18:00 WITA to 21:00 WITA,’ he said during the Bali MUI’s regional working meeting in Denpasar.
