TAIPEI (AFP): Taiwan has sent a 15-member delegation to attend
the senior officials meeting (SOM) of the Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) forum in Yogjakarta, Indonesia.
Leading the Taiwan delegation at the Sept. 12-14 meeting will
be Shen Kuo-hsiung, foreign ministry department director on
international organizations.
Board of Foreign Trade Deputy Director Lin Yi-fu is also in
the mission.
Participants will discuss cooperation in human resource
development, improvement of commercial and public infrastructure,
and other organizational issues.
Indonesia will host six other APEC meetings, including one
task force meeting on the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade, prior to the SOM.
Taiwan was admitted as an APEC member in 1991 together with
China despite protests by Beijing, which regarded Taiwan and Hong
Kong as regional economies.
The delegation is expected to return on Sept. 15.
