Taiwanese navy enters RP port

MANILA (AP): Three Taiwanese navy ships entered the port of
Manila on Friday on a visit that was not announced by Philippine
officials.

The to o governments have no formal diplomatic ties because of
Manila's "one China" policy.

The visit by Taiwanese naval ships could be another source of
imitation between Manila and Beijing, who are embroiled in a
territorial dispute over the Spratly islands and Scarborough
Shoal in the South China Sea. Beijing frowns upon official
contacts between Taiwan and the Philippines.

The two missile frigates and one 17 000-ton command and supply
ship, which also houses a museum on Chinese culture and Taiwan's
economic, technological and military progress, belong to Taiwan's
Midshipman Cruising Training Squadron.
