Taiwanese bizmen complain about security assurance in RI
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Taiwanese businessmen have complained about lack of security assurance for investment in Indonesia in addition to other problems hampering their actvities in the country, an Indonesian economic official said.
The head of industrial affairs at the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taipei, Nawolo Widodo, said here, Friday security assurance was an issue that urgently needed to be addressed.
Nawolo took the example of hoodlum practices committed by both persons and groups, legal or illegal ones.
Other hindrances for investment in Indonesia included lack of infrastructure, bad coordination among institutions, problems with taxes, slow public services, high-cost economy, workers demonstrations, and non conducive manpower regulations.
Taiwan is the fifth largest investor in Indonesia with total investment of US$15 billion.
Although Indonesias economy has yet to recover fully, Taiwanese investors are still keen to invest in the country.
A motorbike producer, Sangyang has planned to put some US$7 million of investment in Indonesia.
Other Taiwanese investors have also eyed investment in development and management of port for export and import such as Bojonegara port in Banten province, and development of industrial estate.
Nawolo said, Taiwanese businessmen have changed their strategy to produce goods with their own brands rather than making a product as ordered by buyers.
He pointed some electronic products, computers, and motorcycles that used Taiwanese brand names.
Indonesia, Nawolo added, should learn from Taiwan on effort to develop small and medium scale enterprises (SME) that could be independent and not rely on big companies.
"SME in Taiwan is independent. But if they join with large scale company they can be much stronger. It means that they are independent," Nawolo said adding that SME has become the backbone for the countrys economy and absorb foreign labors, including Indonesian migrant workers.
Taiwan government has also created conducive situation and regulation for SME and give the opportunity for SME to promote their products in every events.(*)
