Taiwan separatists doomed to fail

Hua Hua, China Daily, Asia News Network, Beijing

Separatists in Taiwan were dealt a heavy blow when their latest attempt to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the international community ended in failure.

On Monday the 55th Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) turned down a proposal to invite Taiwan to participate in its activities as an observer.

This is the sixth time since 1997 that the WHO has rejected such a proposal put forward by a few countries.

Surely it is time that the separatists learn from their repeated failure? The overwhelming majority of votes against such a proposal is a clear and strong signal that the international community recognizes there is only one China, and that Taiwan is a part of China.

Any such attempts to separate Taiwan from the motherland will be doomed to fail.

Die-hard separatists, however, have never given up even after failure and continue to resort to all possible approaches to persuade a few countries to make a noise at the WHO assembly.

Such a proposal poses a virtual challenge to the sovereignty and to the territorial integrity of a member state. It violates the basic principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter, and constitutes an abuse of the right to raise proposals granted to WHO member states.

Such a political showcase staged by the separatist forces in Taiwan, however, has been brushed aside and denounced by the majority of members of the UN.

It seems that separatists on the island did learn some lessons after their previous attempts were foiled. This time they tried to cloak their real purpose with the trick of entering the WHO as a so-called "health entity."

The WHO, however, is a UN organization which consists of sovereign states only. It is by no means an institution made up of so-called entities. And there has never been such a thing as a "health entity" in the 50 years of the WHO's existence.

Taiwan has no qualifications to join it.

Those few separatists on the island could not be so ignorant as to be unaware of what is common knowledge. So one does not have to look too far to see exactly what the Taiwan separatists are plotting.

The purpose for their constant attempts to push Taiwan into the WHO and politicalize health-related issues is nothing more than separating Taiwan from the motherland.

Such a malicious purpose is against the will of compatriots across the Taiwan Straits, and has met with strong protests from Chinese people across the world.
