Strong winds and heavy rain swept through Taipei, Taiwan, on Friday night (23 October 2026) as Typhoon Champi approached the area. The storm brought down trees, disrupted electricity supplies and prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents from mountainous areas.

The Taiwanese government reported one death and more than 500 people injured. A total of 2,639 people were evacuated from mountainous areas as a precaution against extreme weather.

Taipower, Taiwan’s electricity company, said more than 77,000 homes had temporarily lost power because of the storm. Electricity had since been restored to most of the affected homes.

Taiwan’s meteorological agency estimated the storm’s radius at about 320 kilometres (200 miles), wide enough to cover most of the island. Weather experts warned that Typhoon Champi’s effects could last for nearly two days and urged the public to remain alert for strong winds and heavy rain.
