Tadjus quits the race

JAKARTA (JP): Chairman of Golkar's city branch office Tadjus Sobirin announced his withdrawal from the list of proposed candidates for Jakarta's next governor yesterday.

Tadjus said his name was proposed because he was the party's chairman.

"Since the beginning, I had no intention to become Jakarta's next governor. I know my ability. After following some of the governor's activities, I realize I can't follow too many official events. I hope my decision can be understood," Tadjus said.

He said he has urged new Golkar councilors to support the nomination of Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso as the next governor.

Tadjus' withdrawal reduces the number of candidates proposed by the City Council on July 2 from 12 to six.

Five other proposed candidates who have withdrawn are former Jakarta military commander Lt. Gen. A.M. Hendropriyono, former City Council speaker M.H. Ritonga, incumbent Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, deputy governor of development and economic affairs Tb.M. Rais and deputy governor of administrative affairs Idroes. (ste)
