Tackling Street Robberies in Jakarta: DKI DPRD Proposes Modern Siskamling with CCTV and Panic Buttons
JAKARTA — Member of the Jakarta Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD) Commission A, Achmad Yani, said that the widespread street robberies and street crime across several areas of Jakarta have reached a state of emergency.
According to Achmad Yani, many residents now feel afraid when venturing out at night or passing along certain streets due to the prevalence of criminal acts on the streets.
‘This situation cannot be regarded as an ordinary criminal case; it has already entered the category of a local security emergency. The sense of security is a basic right of the people,’ he said at the DPRD building in Jakarta on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
He stated that tackling street robberies cannot rely solely on police arresting perpetrators.
Prevention must also involve communities in the surrounding environment.
Achmad Yani urged the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and the police to work with RT/RW (neighbourhood associations), community leaders, the karang taruna youth association, mosque committees, and even online motorcycle taxi (ojek online) communities to safeguard environmental security.
He also proposed that the neighbourhood security system, or siskamling, be activated again in a more modern way.
Among these are the use of CCTV, panic buttons, and joint patrols in areas prone to street robberies.
Additionally, Achmad Yani asked the government to improve street lighting (PJU) and map the points where robberies frequently occur based on community reports.
He said that young people should also be involved in positive activities to prevent crime, such as social patrols, evening sports, and entrepreneurship programmes.
However, he noted that social coaching and prevention must be carried out in the long term.
He emphasised that Jakarta’s security does not depend solely on authorities but also on the public’s care for the surrounding environment.
‘When the public is active, the environment is caring, and the government is responsive, criminal activity will have less room to operate,’ he said.
