Tabanan Prison Transforms Cramped Space into Layer Chicken Farm

Limited facilities have not deterred Tabanan Class IIB Prison from introducing innovative and productive rehabilitation programmes. The prison is now utilising a branggang area as a layer chicken farm for inmates. Kalapas Tabanan, Prawira Hadiwidjojo, stated that with prior training, inmates now manage the farm, which has been operating for approximately eight months. Despite the confined space, 114 layer chickens are regularly kept and are capable of producing an average of 90 eggs per day. “The harvest is used to meet the raw material needs for culinary activities in the work programme, while the remainder is marketed to prison officers,” Prawira said on Tuesday (4/8/2026). The layer chicken initiative serves as a form of self-sufficiency development for inmates. In addition to providing practical skills for the prisoners, the presence of these chickens also offers tangible benefits in supporting the prison’s internal food security. “We want every potential we have to be utilised optimally to create higher quality rehabilitation,” Prawira added.
