Tabanan DPRD Requests Waste Sorting Solutions for Housing Areas

Chairman of Tabanan DPRD, I Nyoman Arnawa, has spotlighted the Regent of Tabanan’s Circular Letter on source-based waste sorting. According to him, the policy could pose obstacles, particularly for residents in housing areas and boarding houses.

Arnawa believes the regulation must be accompanied by concrete solutions, especially for residents without land, such as the modern composting pits that have been promoted.

“Where are the people living in housing areas supposed to put it? The government must not turn a blind eye; it asks the public to do this and that but must also understand the conditions,” Arnawa stated when met after the Tabanan DPRD Plenary Meeting on Tuesday (21/4/2026).

He compared the situation, noting that people in village or rural areas still have the option to dispose of or burn organic waste in their private gardens (teba). Meanwhile, residents in housing areas are deemed to face difficulties in implementing the same due to limited land.

“I hope the executive can provide real solutions to this issue,” he concluded.

Previously, Regent of Tabanan, I Komang Gede Sanjaya, issued Circular Letter Number 7/DLH/2026 on accelerating source-based waste management.

Under the regulation, starting from early May, the Mandung landfill will only accept residual waste. This means that organic and inorganic waste that can still be processed must be sorted at the source, whether in households, banjars, or village environments.
