T-shirts trendy in Yogyakarta

T-shirts are very common in sports. Most people wear them when
doing sports for relaxation. In Yogyakarta, T-shirts of special
make are sold like peanuts. People wear them while strolling in
town and I am no exception. But for special occasions, like
taking private lessons, meeting with teachers and praying, my
parents would strongly object to my wearing such T-shirts. They
say: "It's neither ethical nor polite." They will tell me to wear
an ordinary shirt, with buttons and collar, preferably batik.

Once, my father was very embarrassed to notice a young lawyer
in Yogyakarta wearing a T-shirt in a meeting attended by elderly
people. However, my father belongs to the older generation who
have a particular liking of what to wear on special occasions.

On the other hand, the younger generation has been molded by
the environment which is quite different from that during the
older generation's time. So, T-shirts should be looked at as
having the same function as other types of dress. Poor father!
A new era has come with its new civilization that no one has the
power to avoid.
