T. Abang project resumes despite ban

JAKARTA: Several vendors at Tanah Abang textile market in Central Jakarta informed the City Council on Monday that a temporary market was still being erected, despite the council's order that the project be halted.

The council had called on the Jakarta administration and city market operator PD Pasar Jaya to delay the project, pending a second opinion as to whether the old market should be demolished and replaced with a new, modern shopping center.

"The developer, PT Sari Kebon Jeruk, continues to establish a temporary market building on Jl. Kebon Melati, where we all will be removed as soon as they demolish the current Tanah Abang market," Sofyan Mashud, representing the traders, was quoted as saying by Tempointeraktif news portal.

The Tanah Abang textile market was constructed in the 1970s. -- JP
