Synergy of Various Roles in Protecting Children from Violence
Clinical child and adolescent psychologist Ocha Ananda Suherik has assessed that collaboration between the roles of parents, schools, and the government is essential in forming efforts to protect children from acts of violence. According to Ocha, parenting, especially by parents, must prioritise positive discipline without physical or verbal violence. “Various studies show that children who grow up in violent parenting patterns have a higher risk of experiencing mental health disorders, becoming victims of violence, and even repeating such patterns of violence later in life,” Ocha said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday.
Furthermore, in creating a safe space for children in the school environment, Ocha stated that teachers and education personnel need to be equipped with the ability to recognise signs of violence, respond to reports appropriately, and understand handling procedures oriented towards the best interests of the child. According to Ocha, schools need to have an accessible reporting mechanism, maintain the confidentiality of victims, and ensure clear follow-up actions so that children feel safe to report.
Ocha further assessed that the government’s role in child protection must be supported by a comprehensive system. In addition, the government needs to ensure that every school has clear child protection standards. “A comprehensive system, ranging from prevention, early detection, case handling, psychological assistance, to law enforcement against perpetrators,” said Ocha. The theme of Indonesia’s 2026 National Children’s Day aims to raise awareness among all elements of the nation to fulfil children’s rights, provide protection from violence, and create a safe and inclusive environment. Protecting children is not solely the task of the family or the government, but a shared responsibility.
