The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, has underscored the importance of zakat, infak, and sedekah as social instruments that can strengthen empathy amid the economic pressures faced by society. During the syawalan event held at Taman Budaya Kulon Progo, Sultan HB X reminded attendees that Eid al-Fitr should not be interpreted merely as a celebration of spiritual victory, but also as a moment to bolster social concern for others, especially those living in economic limitations. “We are required to heighten our empathy for those celebrating in straitened circumstances and hardship, by giving sodakoh, infaq, or aid as much as possible,” he stated on Monday (13/4/2026). According to Sultan HB X, zakat and infak are not only religious obligations but also real solutions in helping communities affected by economic conditions. The DIY Governor emphasised that purification of the self will not be complete without being accompanied by a spirit of compassion towards others. Furthermore, Sultan HB X also reminded of the importance of maintaining unity amid the nation’s dynamics. Division will only bring great losses, while togetherness becomes the main strength in facing various challenges. Sultan HB X expressed that the Indonesian nation will always face various trials, so the spirit of brotherhood, nationalism, and humanity must continue to be guarded and strengthened. “Being in congregation is a blessing, being divided is a torment. Why is being in congregation a blessing? Because by being together, we get to know fellow believers and can reconnect ties of kinship,” said Sultan HB X.
