Syafii, Sadli to receive HB IX Awards

YOGYAKARTA: Muhammadiyah chairman Syafii Ma'arif and rights activist Saparinah Sadli are to receive the Hamengkubuwono (HB) IX Award from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) for their outstanding contribution in their respective fields of expertise and concern.

UGM rector Sofian Effendi announced on Thursday that the two respected figures were selected from 57 candidates by a team of nine comprising the current rector, former UGM rectors and the chairperson of the university's professorial assembly (MGB).

"They have been selected for their outstanding contribution in the fields of science and humanity," Sofian said.

Syafii was also selected because of his consistency in helping the country create harmony among all the components of the nation, while Saparinah was selected for her perseverance in fighting for women's rights.

"The awards will be presented on Dec. 20 during the celebration of UGM's 55th anniversary," Sofian explained. -- JP
