Switzerland: US-Israeli attacks on Iran violate international law
Geneva (ANTARA) – Martin Pfister, a member of the Federal Council and head of Switzerland’s Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, has stated that attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran violate international law.
In an interview with Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger published on the newspaper’s website on Sunday (8 March), as reported by Xinhua, Pfister expressed his concern regarding the escalating situation in the Middle East.
He stated that the Swiss Federal Council believes attacks on Iran violate international law because they breach prohibitions on the use of force, and has called on all parties involved to cease violence and protect civilians.
Pfister added that Switzerland has endeavoured in recent years to maintain open lines of communication between the United States and Iran.
“Unfortunately, in reality, such efforts do not always succeed,” he said.
Prior to the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Iran and the United States held two rounds of indirect talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17 February and 26 February respectively.
