Switzerland to recognize East Timor
SWITZERLAND: The Swiss government said on Wednesday that it would recognize East Timor as a sovereign state and participate in ceremonies marking its independence on May 20.
Gerard Fonjallaz, Swiss Ambassador to Indonesia, will be present at the official ceremony in Dili, according to a statement.
The government announced that it was currently opening up diplomatic and consular ties with the state, which has been under United Nations administration since October 1999, and that it would designate diplomatic officials at a later date. --AFP
