Swede too strong for Wynne
KUALA LUMPUR (Agencies): Indonesia's top women's singles
player Wynne Prakusya fell to experienced Swede Asa Carlsson 6-3,
6-0 in the second round of the US$180,000 Wismilak International
'99 here on Thursday.
Tennis observer Benny Mailili, who is also spokesman of the
Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti), said Wynne did not serve
and return well against Carlsson, whose world ranking was as high
as 28 in 1997.
"Wynne lost because of her lack of consistency in rallies
against the experienced Carlsson," he said.
Wynne lost her serve at the outset of the match to trail 0-2.
She took one game before Carlsson raced to a 5-1 lead. Wynne
began to fight back by taking two consecutive games but the Swede
closed out the set.
Wynne was whitewashed in the second set as Carlsson romped to
victory in one hour and 10 minutes. But the score was not
indicative of the closeness of the set, with Wynne taking every
game to deuce except the fifth game on her opponent's serve.
Carlsson will meet Anastasia Myskina of Russia who upset top
seed Sarah Pitkowski of France 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Second seed Sylvia Plischke of Austria went down tamely to
Italian Rita Grande 1-6, 3-6. Grande will face Tamarine
Tanasugarn of Thailand, who crushed seventh seed Nicole Pratt of
Australia 6-3, 4-7, 7-5.
Sixth seed Kristina Brandi of the United States defeated Olga
Barabanschikova of Belarus 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. (yan)
