Suwung Landfill Burns Again, Blamed on Hot Weather

The Suwung landfill in Denpasar caught fire again on Saturday (22/8/2026) afternoon. The flames burned a mound of rubbish covering an area of approximately 15 by 5 metres in an elongated shape.

Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished using two water tankers belonging to the Regional Technical Implementation Unit for Waste Management of the Bali Forestry and Environment Agency, which were on standby. The extinguishing process lasted 17 minutes.

According to detikBali’s observations, the burned waste area has been tidied up. There are no longer any fire spots in the waste piles at the landfill.

“It was isolated earlier, so it was extinguished within 17 minutes,” said the Head of the Bali Forestry and Environment Agency, I Made Dwi Arbani, when met at the location.

Dwi explained that the fire was reported to have occurred at 12.05 WITA. The Bali Forestry and Environment Agency then deployed two tanker trucks equipped with nozzles. The tanker trucks are always on standby for emergencies at fire locations.

The firefighting process was also assisted by three pieces of heavy equipment in the form of excavators to dig up the waste and open up fire spots so they could be extinguished. As a result, the fire was recorded as having been extinguished at 12.22 WITA.

“We have anticipated this with two water tankers with nozzles. That is our standard operating procedure in an emergency. The heavy equipment will help to move the waste,” Dwi explained.

The process continued with cooling of the fire spots assisted by the Fire Department fleet. Afterwards, operations at the Suwung landfill returned to normal and trucks were able to enter again at 14.01 WITA.

Dwi revealed that the waste fire at the Suwung landfill was caused by hot weather conditions. Therefore, the Waste Management Unit of the Bali Forestry and Environment Agency always keeps two water tanker trucks on standby as a measure to anticipate fires from spreading.

In addition, the Waste Management Unit also routinely sprays water on the waste once a week across the entire landfill area to maintain the temperature. Watering can also be carried out at any time if needed.

“What is also routine is that we spray water from the fire department as needed to prevent fires,” Dwi explained.
