Suwandi and Hendri out of men's Futures-1

JAKARTA (JP): Davis Cup team members, Suwandi and Hendri Susilo Pramono, had to make an early exit from the first round of the Indonesia Futures-1 on Wednesday.

Suwandi bowed out to top seeded Artem Derepasko of Russia 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 and Hendri was humiliated by unseeded Chung Seong-Yoon of South Korea 3-6, 5-7.

Other Davis Cup team members, who got wild cards to compete in the US$15,000 event held at the Kemayoran Tennis Center in Central Jakarta, proceeded to the second round.

Febi Widhiyanto outclassed fellow countryman Yusmawan Fahmi 6- 0, 6-2 while Edy Kusdaryanto defeated fifth seeded Vladimir Plantenik of Slovakia 6-3, 6-4.

Febi will fight Derepasko on Thursday and Edy will challenge Kwon Oh-hee of South Korea, who beat Marc Merry of the Netherlands 6-0, 7-5.

Veteran player and double specialist Bonit Wiryawan overcame fellow countryman Dede Suhendar Dinata 6-2, 7-5. Lucky loser Bonit, replacing eighth seeded Willem P. Meyer who failed to show up on Wednesday, will play Chung on Thursday.

Indonesian qualifier Andrian Raturandang, who won the men's singles of Niaga Cigna Open 2000 two weeks ago, barely broke a sweat to beat another qualifier, Lars Zimmermann of Germany 6-1, 6-2.

Andrian will face Austrian Zbynek Mlynarik, who beat lucky loser Abdul Hamid Makhkamov of Uzbekistan 6-1, 6-4.

In the Indonesia Women's Circuit-2, only two host singles of Irawati Moerid Iskandar and Wukirasih Sawondari continued to the second round.

Veteran Irawati beat fifth seeded Ayami Takase of Japan 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to meet qualifier Anouk Sterk of the Netherlands, who beat Japanese Satoko Kurioka 6-3, 7-5.

Wukirasih, winner of the women's singles of the Niaga Cigna Open 2000, advanced to the second round after an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Angelique Widjaja. Wukirasih will play eighth seeded Chung Yang-jin from South Korea, who beat another Indonesian hopeful, Dea Sumantri 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Indonesian Frederika Girsang lost to the 1999 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games women singles gold medalist, second seed Maricris Fernandez 4-6, 1-6. Fernandez will challenge South Korean Jeon Mi-ra, who won the women's Circuit-1 last week.

Jeon beat Natalie Grandin of South Africa 6-3, 7-5.(ivy)
