Sutrisno equals world record in powerlifting
JAKARTA (JP): Despite a wrist injury, Sutrisno of Lampung managed to break the world record in the bench press at the 15th National Games (PON) powerlifting event at the Marine Hall in Surabaya on Saturday.
Sutrisno, competing in the men's 60 kilograms division, earned a gold medal after lifting a total of 675kg in the squat, bench press and dead lift.
He lifted 186.5kg in the bench press, beating the previous Asian record of 185.5kg and the former world record of 186.0kg both made by Isagawa Hiroyoki of Japan. He also bettered the former PON record of 160.0kg and old national record of 170.0kg, both set by himself.
The silver went to Iko Tadisko of West Java with a total lift of 607.5kg while the bronze was won by Albert of Riau with a total lift of 595.0kg.
In the men's 67.5kg division, Deriswan of Jambi grabbed the gold after lifting 725.0kg overall followed by Sukatma of West Java with a total lift of 672.5kg and Junidela of Riau with a total lift of 670.0kg.
Sutrisno expressed pride at his success as he considers PON a very important sporting event for him. However, he was dissatisfied with his total lift as he usually lifts 725.0kg during training sessions.
"Usually I can break records in squat, bench press, dead lift and total lift. But today, I only managed to equal the bench press record as I'm still maintaining my physical condition. Winning a gold medal is good enough for me," he said as quoted by Antara after the competition.
Sutrisno had malaria two weeks prior to PON and was still dealing with a wrist injury which made him unable to lift anything heavier.
He failed to lift in the squat's third try after lifting 260.0kg. He also opted not to make a third effort in the dead lift after lifting 230.0 kg.
Sutrisno voiced uncertainty about whether he could continue his career as a powerlifter due to his age. He is 27 years old. He only said that coach Imron Rosadi knew better about his physical condition.
Imron, who is also chairman of the Indonesian Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding Association (PABBSI) Lampung chapter, expressed joy at Sutrisno's success.
"He missed training for about a month. Two weeks before PON started he even suffered from malaria and had to be hospitalized," he said.
In the women's section, Marlina of Lampung also managed to grab the gold in the 52kg division with a total lift of 451.0kg -- 180.0kg in squat, 111.0kg in bench press and 160.0kg in dead lift.
The silver went to Siti Jamilah of West Kalimantan with a total lift of 430.0kg.
Marlina also managed to top the 175.0kg national record in squat set by Mingguriati by lifting 180.0kg. She also beat the 172.5kg Asian record in squat set by Chen Kuan Ting of China Taipei by lifting 180.0kg.
She also outdid the Asian record bench press of 106.5kg made by Lin Li Ming of Taipei and world record bench press of 108.0kg set by Anna Olsson of Sweden by lifting 111.0kg.
"I'm very happy and I dedicate my achievement to my parents, coach Imron Rosadi and the people of Lampung," said the 21-year- old woman. (yan)
