Sutiyoso wins more support

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso received more support for his nomination as Jakarta's next governor from the city branch of Kosgoro, an organization affiliated with Golkar, yesterday.

Chairman of Kosgoro's city office, Rudi Simanjuntak, said in a statement that Sutiyoso should be given serious consideration as next governor due to his success as Jakarta's military commander.

"Knowledge and territorial ability, along with his experience in dealing with Jakarta's broad range of culture, are vital for the governor candidates," Rudi said.

He said Kosgoro was confident that Sutiyoso would have a better chance and ability to become Jakarta's next governor.

On Sunday, Golkar city branch chairman Tadjus Sobirin said the 39 councilors from Golkar would support Sutiyoso's nomination as Jakarta's next governor.

Currently, only four proposed governor candidates remain, a sharp decline from the 12 candidates announced by the City Council last month. The other eight declined their nominations.

The other three remaining candidates are Army Territorial Center Chief Maj. Gen. Adang Ruchiatna P., legislator Achmadi and City Secretary Harun Al Rasyid. (ste)
