Sutiyoso puts blame on inspection bodies

JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso blamed on Tuesday the four inspection agencies' overlapping supervision of the city administration's inefficiency.

"There are four agencies supervising the city administration, making it difficult for us to work properly," Sutiyoso said while addressing participants of a panel discussion on the role of the city's inspectorate agency.

He said the agencies were the Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP), the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), the Ministry of Home Affairs' Inspectorate General and the city's inspectorate agency.

"These stratum inspections from both the central government and the city inspectorate agencies are not efficient. Indeed, it is a waste of effort, money and time," the governor said.

He welcomed Law No. 22/1999 on regional autonomy, which establishes the regional inspectorate agency as an autonomous body.

"The enactment of the law means that there will be no more intervention from the central government's inspectorate agencies," he said.

"The regional agency can recruit several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the supervisory duties," he said, while suggesting the establishment of an independent coordinating board to bridge the inspectorate agency and the NGOs.

"The board should be simple yet accurate and effective in forming a clean governance," he said.

The governor called on city residents to send their complaints to P.O. Box 0008 on unjust actions or mischief carried out by his subordinates.

"I will read the letters and make necessary follow-ups," he said. (05/jun)
