Sustainable Lifestyle Drives Utilisation of Waste into Useful Products

The trend of sustainable consumption is encouraging businesses to no longer view residual materials as mere waste. The utilisation of used materials into new, useful products is being developed as part of efforts to build more responsible consumption patterns.

One such initiative is being carried out by Toko Serba Tuku (TOSERBAKU), a business line of Toko Kopi TUKU. Since 2020, TOSERBAKU has been working with SMEs in Gunung Sindur to develop a programme for processing creamer sachets made from multilayer plastic into various upcycled products.

According to the MAKA Group Sustainability Report 2025, the programme has processed 5.53 tonnes of creamer sachets into more than 25 types of products. The residual materials are transformed into tote bags, pouches, coasters, furniture, and souvenirs for the shops.

This step is part of efforts to strengthen the circular economy by extending the useful life of materials that previously had the potential to end up as waste. The programme also contributes to MAKA Group’s achievement of diverting 92 percent of waste from final disposal.

VP Growth & Expansion of TUKU, Diana Frances, said that the use of recycled and upcycled materials is not only related to environmental aspects, but can also be developed as part of a business strategy.

“Being environmentally friendly is not just a creative identity, but a strategic direction for TOSERBAKU. We see great potential in recycled and upcycled products as a line that is relevant to consumer needs,” said Diana.

According to her, this approach is part of efforts to ensure that business activities have a positive impact on the environment as well as the communities involved.

TOSERBAKU is targeting the product line based on these principles to become one of the drivers of business growth in the coming years. The company will also develop experiments with new materials together with local craftsmen and innovators, including the use of residual operational materials and recycled materials.

In addition to product development, TOSERBAKU plans to expand public education on material sorting and mindful consumption. Collaboration with creators and local businesses will also be developed to combine function, creativity, and sustainability principles.

This step is in line with the development of TOSERBAKU, which enters its fourth year in 2026. Since its launch in 2022, TOSERBAKU has been developed as a retail shop providing daily necessities, souvenirs, coffee beans, and ready-to-drink beverages that adapt to consumer needs.

Entering its fourth year, TOSERBAKU is placing the concept of “Ramah” (Friendly) as the foundation for product development and collaboration. The concept is directed at integrating creativity, sustainability, and social responsibility in business development.
