Suspension Bridge Cables in Pangandaran Detach Shortly After Inauguration; KDM Steps In to Promise Permanent Construction
The West Java Provincial Government has officially taken over the management of the suspension bridge in Margacinta Village, Cijulang District, Pangandaran Regency, after the infrastructure sagged shortly after its inauguration on Sunday, 30 August.
The Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, popularly known as KDM, stated that the West Java Provincial Government will build a permanent bridge in 2027 to replace the unfortunate suspension bridge, aiming to support inter-regional connectivity and the mobility of four-wheeled vehicles to bolster the local economy.
He revealed that the takeover of this project was undertaken due to the limited Regional Budget (APBD) allocations of the Pangandaran Regency Government.
“We will immediately build a permanent bridge so that it can be used by many people and cars, and can transport agricultural, livestock, fishery, and marine products,” said Dedi.
Dedi emphasised that the collapsed suspension bridge facility was not a project or work undertaken by the West Java Provincial Government.
Nevertheless, he continued, intervention from the provincial government was deemed urgent to ensure that food commodities and community activities are not isolated, while also advising that the permanent facility to be built in the future must not be misused for dangerous activities such as racing.
Previously, the unfortunate incident occurred when the Margacinta Village suspension bridge suddenly collapsed on Sunday, 30 August, at 16:00 WIB.
The incident took place shortly after the inauguration ceremony, while the Regent of Pangandaran, Citra Pitriyami, along with dozens of residents, were on the bridge span.
