Suspected Orange Thief Beaten to Death by Mob in Banyuwangi

An unidentified man died after being beaten by a mob when he was allegedly caught stealing oranges from a resident’s orchard in Bangorejo District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Police are still investigating the mob attack.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Banyuwangi Police Resort, Commissioner Lanang Teguh Pambudi, confirmed the incident of suspected assault resulting in death. The event occurred on Tuesday (15/9/2026).

“The alleged incident did indeed occur, but we are currently still awaiting the results of our officers’ investigation in the field,” Lanang said, as quoted by detikJatim.

The police deployed an identification team to the scene at around 12.00 Western Indonesia Time. Officers gathered evidence and questioned a number of witnesses around the crime scene.

Initial identification results showed the victim was an adult male. Police are still working to establish the victim’s identity and are pursuing the perpetrators of the mob attack.

“The victim is male; the identification team departed for the location at 12.00 Western Indonesia Time,” Lanang stated.
