Suspect in Bandung Confinement Case Revealed as Recidivist Who Assaulted Ex-Wife

The West Java Regional Police have revealed new facts about Taufik Hidayat, the suspect in the confinement and assault case against a woman with the initials YTR in Bandung Regency. West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan stated that Taufik is a recidivist in a violence case. Rudi said Taufik had previously been convicted for a similar offence, namely the assault of his former wife in the city of Bandung. “This suspect is a recidivist because he previously committed similar violence against a woman and was sentenced to one year and four months in prison. The incident occurred in the city of Bandung,” Rudi said during a press conference at the West Java Regional Police Headquarters in Bandung on Friday (26/6). In light of this criminal record, Rudi asserted that his party would charge the suspect with multiple articles to ensure he receives a commensurate punishment for his actions. “The West Java Regional Police will maximise the application of articles against the suspect. We ask for the support of all parties so that the violence committed by the suspect receives a commensurate punishment,” he stressed. Based on the interim investigation results, the assault against YTR is believed to have been carried out repeatedly because the suspect felt upset and jealous. The violence was committed in various ways, ranging from using bare hands, blunt objects such as iron, sharp weapons, a helmet, to stubbing out cigarettes on the victim’s body. In addition to being assaulted, the victim was also confined in a rented room and not allowed to leave because the door was locked from the outside. The confinement and assault case is believed to have lasted for about three years in a rented room in the Cileunyi area, Bandung Regency. As a result of the suspect’s actions, the victim suffered a number of serious injuries that affected her physical condition, including impaired vision, difficulty speaking, and an inability to walk normally. Rudi added that investigators are currently completing the evidence and coordinating with the West Java High Prosecutor’s Office to optimise the law enforcement process against the suspect.
