Susilo confirms talks with Israel's FM

NEW YORK: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono confirmed late on Friday an informal meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda and Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on the sidelines of the 2005 World Summit, as part of Indonesia's effort to help Palestinians achieve full independence.

Israel and Indonesia have no formal diplomatic ties.

Susilo said it was in the interests of the world and of Muslims around the globe that Palestine eventually gains full independence. Palestine was also supportive of Indonesia's initiative to mediate the peace process between Israel and Palestine, he said.

"For that purpose, Indonesia can open contact with any country in its bid to help Palestine to reach her independence," Susilo said after a meeting with the local Indonesian community. --JP
