Susanto to meet GM Edhi in semis

JAKARTA: Sixteen-year-old Susanto Megaranto will meet his senior, Grand Master (GM) Edhi Handoko, in the semifinals of the Gunadarma Chess League here on Friday.

Susanto reached the top four after beating Heru Adfa 1.5-0.5 points in two games on Thursday, while Edhi, who won the Japfa festival over the weekend, extended into the blitz game to stop Eko Suprianto 3-2.

The other semifinal pits FIDE Master (FM) Irwanto Sadikin and Johan Gunawan. Irwanto won over Haryadi Sucipto 1.5-0.5 during the day and Johan scraped through, dispatching Aris TLS by the same score.

The champion of the league will earn Rp 8 million of the total Rp 37 million in winnings, as well as a spot in the world's qualifying tournament in Vietnam in April. -- JP
