Survivors of KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 Fire Evacuated to Tanjung Perak
Some survivors of the KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 fire in Sumenep are being evacuated to Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya. The survivors are expected to arrive in the early hours of the morning.
According to Purwanto Wahyu Widodo, Regional Head of Jawa PT Pelindo Regional 3, there are four ships carrying the survivors. “Four ships. The information we have received is that four ships are planned to dock at Perak between 23:00 and 01:00 WIB,” said Purwanto.
Purwanto explained that these four vessels are still en route to Tanjung Perak, Surabaya. He noted that some survivors are also being transported to Sumenep. Additionally, Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) vessels are involved. “Basarnas received information at 09:00 this morning and immediately departed for the scene at the coordinates of the burning ship. Evacuations are underway, but we are still coordinating with the Basarnas team as there is no confirmed time for their return,” he added.
Video footage shows panic amongst hundreds of passengers crowding the bridge and bow areas of the ship while using life jackets. Some passengers were seen jumping into the sea. So far, four people have been declared dead.
