Jakarta (ANTARA) - Results from the 2025 Inter-Census Population Survey (Supas) show that the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Jakarta is 9.26 per 1,000 live births, a decline compared to the 2010 Population Census figure of 10.38 per 1,000 live births.

“Compared to the 2010 Population Census, the IMR from Supas 2025 has fallen by nearly half, reflecting increasingly better chances for infants to survive their first year of life,” said the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for DKI Jakarta, Kadarmanto, in a podcast monitored in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Based on the distribution across regencies/municipalities in DKI Jakarta, the lowest IMR was recorded in Central Jakarta at 8.74, followed by South Jakarta at 9.13, West Jakarta at 9.63, North Jakarta at 9.73, East Jakarta at 9.87, and the Thousand Islands at 10.63.

BPS also noted that the IMR in the regencies/municipalities of DKI Jakarta province is relatively low compared to the national average of 14.12.

Meanwhile, the total fertility rate (TFR) in Jakarta is recorded at 1.79, below the replacement level of 2.10.

“This is mainly driven by a significant decline in birth rates among women in the 15-19 and 20-24 age groups. Meanwhile, other age groups show stagnant figures,” Kadarmanto explained.

According to him, birth control is needed to ensure balanced population growth.

Furthermore, he mentioned the TFR by regency/municipality: Central Jakarta, the lowest at 1.59, followed by South Jakarta at 1.71, East Jakarta at 1.81, West Jakarta at 1.82, North Jakarta at 1.91, and the Thousand Islands at 2.14.

“The disparity in TFR quality is relatively low because almost all mainland areas of DKI are still below the replacement level of 2.10. Only the Thousand Islands shows a figure above the replacement level,” Kadarmanto added.
