Survey Proves 63% of US Citizens Dissatisfied with Donald Trump's Performance
US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has plummeted to its lowest point in his second term. This decline is driven by growing public disappointment with the economic situation and the handling of the conflict with Iran.
According to the latest NBC News Decision Desk poll supported by SurveyMonkey, overall, only 37% of Americans expressed satisfaction with Trump’s performance, while 63% disagreed, including 50% who strongly disagreed. This figure marks the lowest level throughout his second term.
“Two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of inflation,” the survey results stated, as quoted on Tuesday (21/4/2026). Additionally, a majority of respondents also rejected Trump’s approach to the Iran conflict.
Support from the Republican Party base is beginning to show cracks. Although still relatively high, approval among Republicans has fallen to 83%, a 4-point weakening compared to the start of the year. Even strong approval from this group has dropped from 58% to 52%.
The survey also indicates rising pessimistic sentiment. Only one-third of Americans believe the country is on the right track, while two-thirds think otherwise, marking the most pessimistic view since Trump returned to office.
Economy Becomes the Main Culprit
Economic issues are the primary concern for Americans. As many as 29% of respondents cited the economy as the most important issue currently, followed by threats to democracy (24%), healthcare services (12%), and crime and security (10%).
Among various economic issues, inflation and rising living costs are the biggest complaints, chosen by 45% of respondents. Only 32% of citizens approve of Trump’s handling of inflation, while 68% disapprove.
A majority even expressed strong dissatisfaction. As many as 52% of respondents said they strongly disapprove of Trump’s policies in addressing price increases.
“The percentage of citizens who strongly disapprove has increased significantly compared to last summer,” the survey report stated.
The impact is felt directly in the financial condition of the public. Around 40% of Americans admit their financial situation is worse than a year ago, while only 19% feel it is better.
Rising energy prices are further exacerbating the pressure. Nearly two-thirds of respondents cite petrol prices as a problem for their families, with 29% considering it a serious issue.
Rejection of the Iran War
Dissatisfaction is also evident in foreign policy. Around two-thirds of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the conflict with Iran, while only one-third support it.
This view has not changed much even after Trump announced a temporary ceasefire on 7 April. Support for the war policy remains stagnant around one-third of the population.
The majority of citizens also reject further military escalation. As many as 61% of respondents believe the US should not take additional military action in Iran.
Rejection is stronger from the younger generation. As many as 74% of citizens under 30 years old oppose the continuation of military action.
Immigration Provides Slight Relief
Amid the pressure, Trump is still getting a slight boost from the immigration issue. Approval for border and immigration policies has risen to 44%, up 4 points from the start of the year.
However, the majority of the public (56%) still expresses dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, efforts to reform election rules are also receiving broad support. Around 75% of Americans support the requirement to show photo identification to vote, and 61% of them want that requirement to include proof of citizenship.
The poll results highlight the major challenges facing the Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections. Disappointment with the economy and foreign policy is becoming a key factor that could erode voter support, even though Trump previously promised to curb inflation and avoid involvement in global conflicts.
