Ottawa (ANTARA) - Canadians express deep concern over the direction of US policy, with 80% stating that their southern neighbour is on the wrong path.

According to a survey released on Sunday (24 May) by Abacus Data, only 14% of Canadians believe the US is moving in the right direction.

Meanwhile, 47% of Canadians say their own country is moving in the right direction, while 39% believe it is on the wrong path.

The survey noted that the gap between perceptions of Canada and the wider world has widened since Donald Trump returned to the White House and Mark Carney became Canada’s prime minister.

“Public opinion is currently less influenced by domestic fatigue and more by external anxieties,” said David Coletto, CEO of Abacus Data.

Coletto added that although Canadians remain deeply concerned about affordability and economic uncertainty, they are increasingly attributing these pressures to external forces such as Trump, instability in the US, and broader global volatility, rather than directly blaming the federal government.

59% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the performance of Canada’s federal government, with only 27% dissatisfied.

This represents the highest approval rating for the federal government, with the previous record of 57% set in August 2016 under Trudeau’s administration, according to the survey.
