Surprise! Here's Why Purbaya Underpaid Rp50 Million When Filing SPT

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Bureau of Communication and Information Services (KLI) of the Ministry of Finance has affirmed that Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, as a taxpayer, has reported his Annual Tax Return for the 2025 Tax Year on time and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

This statement was issued after Finance Minister Purbaya revealed that he had filed his tax return and was declared to have an underpayment of Rp50 million.

Head of the KLI Bureau, Deni Surjantoro, explained that in the tax system, underpayment can occur, particularly for taxpayers with income from more than one source.

“All such income is combined in the tax calculation, while tax withholdings by each employer are done separately. This situation can cause a difference between the tax already withheld and the tax payable, including due to the application of progressive tariffs,” said Deni.

Deni added that to support ease and accuracy in reporting, the Coretax system has integrated tax data automatically (prepopulated), including withholding evidence, thus helping taxpayers fill out the Annual Tax Return correctly, completely, and clearly in accordance with regulations.

When met at the Ministry of Finance office on Wednesday (25/3/2026), Purbaya recounted that he experienced an underpayment of Rp50 million after filing his tax return.

Purbaya explained that the underpayment likely occurred because his 2025 income came from two places: first as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), and then from September 2025 when he was inaugurated as Finance Minister.

“If you work in many places, you’re almost certainly going to underpay, unless it’s just one place. When I was at LPS, I never (underpaid), it was always spot on because the salary was only from LPS. But now, part of it is from LPS, part from here,” he explained.
