Surpassing 60 Million Users, Bank Indonesia Governor Reveals Origins of QRIS

Jakarta, VIVA – Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo has expressed deep gratitude that the QR Indonesian Standard, known as QRIS, has now surpassed 60 million users.

He made the remarks during the inauguration of the Indonesia Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI), held at Bank Indonesia’s headquarters in Jakarta.

“How many people are now using QRIS? Sixty million QRIS users,” said Perry on Monday, 23 February 2026.

He explained that QRIS began as an idea and a dream, which was shaped into a vision and a series of concrete actions before ultimately becoming reality.

“It all started from a dream, became a vision, then turned into action, and finally became reality as the result of synergy and collaboration,” he said.

Perry went on to recount the journey of QRIS as a major innovation and breakthrough in Indonesia’s financial technology landscape. As a system that makes financial transactions easy for the public, QRIS can now even be used for cross-border payments.

Since 2019, approximately ten months before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, his team had been developing the vision and a series of actions to establish QRIS. At the time, BI also launched the blueprint for Indonesia’s digital payment system covering the period from 2019 to 2025.

“The momentum at that time included 17 August 2019, when we proclaimed a single language for digital payment services. It was called QR Indonesian Standard — QRIS, pronounced ‘kris’, not ‘Q-R-I-S’,” said Perry.

At the time, Perry acknowledged that there were approximately 13 to 14 separate QR payment systems, which were ultimately unified into QRIS. Over time, QRIS has become a landmark achievement for Indonesia’s financial sector.

“That was our vision and our dream back then, and we have now successfully realised it and made it as significant as it is today,” he said.
