Surjadi wants successful election

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja has urged
Jakartans to help the government make the upcoming 1997 elections
a success.

When visiting the Pondok Kopi district in East Jakarta
yesterday the governor, in political jargon, suggested that the
public cultivate peace and unity in society.

"It's very important for us to cultivate unity and integrity,"
Surjadi was quoted by Antara as saying.

Meanwhile, the governor said earlier that the elections could
be improved by taking two steps.

Firstly, the list of eligible voters should be more widely
publicized to inform citizens that they can vote.

Also, minority party members should be able to monitor polling
places in districts other than their own, as currently stipulated
by law. (14)
