Surjadi defends IDs operation

JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said the operations
by officials against illegal migrants are intended to ensure that
Jakartans live in humane conditions.

"I don't want any newcomers to become homeless in Jakarta,"
Surjadi said yesterday.

He was opening the city's month-long promotion of the sub-
district resilience boards (LKMD), which are sub-district or
village level consultation bodies among representatives of
officials and residents.

Surjadi said the checking of identity cards must be continued.

The operation aims to prevent uncontrolled urban growth, he
said, which in turn will help ensure humane conditions for all
Jakartans.

Hundreds of newcomers have been sent home to their hometowns
recently. (anr)
