Surging Demand: Lion Air Prepares Nine Umrah Flights Per Week
Danang Mandala Prihantoro, Corporate Communications Strategic of Lion Group, has announced that the airline is increasing its Umrah flight services to nine times per week, following high public demand for religious travel after this year’s Hajj season. “We are optimistic that the demand for Umrah travel continues to rise. Previously, our frequency was six times a week, but we are now preparing for nine times a week,” Danang stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
He noted that general air travel demand continues to show a positive trend, despite the industry entering a low season. According to Danang, travel needs for tourism, school holidays, business, and religious pilgrimages remain the primary drivers for air transport usage. Consequently, Lion Group, through BookCabin, is providing various travel solutions to ensure passengers can travel within their respective budgets.
Regarding the religious travel segment, Danang believes the prospects for Umrah remain very promising, driven by relatively stable and growing annual demand. This optimism is further bolstered by high demand from travel bureau partners and tour agents, who are actively preparing various Umrah packages following the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage. To accommodate this, Lion Air is currently operating an average of nine flights to Jeddah each week, an increase from the previous frequency of six.
This increase in frequency serves as a response to market growth and aims to expand access for people from various regions to Saudi Arabia via the airline’s flight network. “The service concept being developed does not only focus on passengers from Jakarta, but also connects other cities to Jeddah flights via Jakarta,” he added. Lion Air utilises Airbus A330-300 and Airbus A330-900 Neo aircraft, which have capacities of up to 433 seats per flight. With this capacity, the nine weekly flights are capable of providing thousands of seats for those intending to perform religious pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
